ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
Since its founding at the 1964 – 65 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has inspired millions of people — children, teachers and families — by offering creative, participatory ways to learn and encouraging people to explore their curiosity and nurture their creativity. Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the country, NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors each year and serves thousands more through outreach in schools, teacher professional development programs, and participation in a variety of public events and research initiatives.

NYSCI is a leader in the science museum field, recognized for its highly regarded exhibitions, programs and products, all of which are informed by strategies of engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play — open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement and delight — are the ingredients that inspire passionate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learners. NYSCI engages diverse communities of learners, particularly young people, in STEM, by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people’s play. Our transformative model for STEM exploration invites broad participation and makes engagement and learning irresistible.

NYSCI has approximately 80 full time and over 60 part time staff.

DEPARTMENT ROLE
The Education Services team supports NYSCI’s mission by developing and implementing a vast array of innovative educational programs for Pre-K-12th grade students, educators and families. Our programs invite learners to actively engage in the exploration of STEM concepts and practices. The department cultivates many local and national partnerships, including colleges and universities; collaborates on research projects; develops STEM learning resources; and leads educational initiatives with our community to increase science awareness, excitement and interest in learners of all ages.

FUNCTION
The Family Learning Coordinator will collaborate with internal and external community stakeholders to develop and implement a series of family learning programs and resources/toolkits designed to engage families from our local community in learning STEM together, increase parent’s/caregiver’s confidence in how to support their child’s learning at home and increase children’s interest in STEM. The Coordinator will have primary responsibility for both developing stand-alone programs that achieve these goals, and working with staff across the institution to promote, support, and study the use of specific professional learning strategies that we are translating for use with caregivers and family groups. In both areas of work, the Coordinator will be expected to draw on and build connections to current best practices in STEM professional learning.

The Family Learning Coordinator will also be responsible for collaborating with the Community Partnership Coordinator to support all aspects of NYSCI community engagement initiatives including assisting with community festivals, outreaches, STEM family days, collaborative group meetings with NYSCI departments, and representing NYSCI’s community engagement partnership and family learning model through presentations, conferences, and other networks or partner meetings.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the design, development and implementation of family learning programs, curriculum and resources that integrate successful family engagement strategies for parents to support their child’s learning and best practices in professional learning for educators.
  • Actively participate in a collaboration process with a parent advisory group and other collaborative groups to collect feedback that will inform the design and modifications of family learning programs to ensure a high quality experience for participants that meets desired program outcomes.
  • Develop and implement a program recruitment plan including collaborating with school representatives, designing and disseminating bilingual promotional materials, collecting registration forms, planning orientation sessions or outreach offsite and utilizing online and social media platforms to communicate program opportunities.
  • Create and conduct a consistent process for program assessment including project team reflection, observation tools, surveys, participant interviews and other forms of formative and summative assessments that will inform program modifications and program impact on participants.
  • Develop and produce user-friendly, age-appropriate and culturally responsive curriculum or activity guides for publication and dissemination.
  • Create and maintain a participant database that captures program participant retention rate, demographics, and other statistics that will inform program reporting, recruitment and other statistical needs.
  • Collaborate with Education Services staff and other NYSCI departments to implement community engagement programs/events, and develop a shared responsibility in creating a welcoming space for engaging our community across departments.
  • Assist in producing project report narratives and developing new concepts for family learning or community engagement grant funded opportunities aligned with NYSCI initiatives and best practices.
  • Assist in the dissemination of NYSCI’s community engagement initiatives and family engagement model through conferences, network meetings, publications, social media, etc.
  • Maintain and track budget expenses and storage materials associated with assigned projects.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and assist in other Education Services duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. or equivalent degree in science, education, museum studies or relevant field.
  • 2-3 years of experience designing and implementing family learning programs for diverse audiences with an emphasis on Latino families
  • 3 years of experience developing and implementing professional learning programs for educators or adults.
  • Fluency in Spanish (Oral and written)

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Familiar with progressive pedagogy and culturally relevant teaching strategies for formal and informal settings that supports creative engaged learning for parents, caregivers and their children.
  • Extensive knowledge on best practices in designing, implementing, and evaluating family learning and community engagement programs to achieve learning outcomes.
  • Experience working effectively as part of a team and independently to achieve goals.
  • Knowledgeable about NYS science curriculum, standards and assessment as well as the Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Flexible scheduling to participate in events outside the workday schedule and must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and actively listen with internal and external stakeholders including partners, program participants, supervisors and other team members.
  • Ability to establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
M.A. degree in the appropriate field

COMPENSATION
$55,000 annual salary; includes an excellent NYSCI benefits package.
